How To Use Notion Timeline View

Do you want to know how to create a Gantt chart in your Notion database?

If you have a database of projects, or perhaps a database of tasks within a project, you can display it in what Notion refers to as a Timeline View. Timeline View is a more powerful version of a Gantt chart as it allows you to organize your projects or tasks along a timeline.

In this article, we’ll show you how to make a Notion Gantt chart with the database Timeline View. We’ll also show you how to work with it, as well as how to customize it and use it to be more productive.

How To Use Notion Timeline View As Gantt Chart

For this tutorial, let’s make a simple tasks database for a new web design project.

Most projects have dates associated with them, and dates are essential for a Timeline View. It is useful to have both a start date and a due date for the Gantt chart or the Timeline View. After all, most projects do not get completed in a single day, so planning your start and finish dates is important.

Let’s add some tasks to the project and assign them the start and due dates.

Now, click on the toggle at the top of your database and then click on Add a view.

Notion will automatically layout your tasks and distribute them across the dates, from the start date to the due date of each task. It looks and works like the Gantt chart You also get the tasks table on the left which shows all tasks in a list.

The Timeline View gives you an easy visualization of all of your tasks and how they are layed out. You can easily tell on which day or time you have too much work and when you have very little work.

If you have a large project database with multiple departments or projects for specific clients, you can filter your view to show only the projects you want to see.

You can also sort your tasks or milestones by alphabetical order, start date, due date, or any other property they have.

One of the best features of Notion’s Timeline View is that you can easily change the start or due date (or both) by simply dragging one end and stretching or compressing it to the dates you need.

Up at the top right, you can set the amount of time you want to see in your timeline, ranging from annually to hourly.

change the view to show specific amount of time

You can use the time blocking technique and set the Timeline View to show the timeline in hours. For the Timeline View in hours, your tasks need to have the start and end time along with a date.

Notion by default shows the tasks list on the left. If you want a clean look of your timeline, you can simply hide the list. On mobile devices, the list is hidden by default.

Aside from that, you can also specify which other properties must be displayed next to the tasks or project name. For example, you could have tags for your tasks that indicate the task’s priority.

You can just click on the three dots at the top right of the timeline and select the properties you want to display in your timeline.
